To tell how I got into tufting, I have to start at the beginning. From a young age, I always enjoyed doing creative things. Drawing, in particular, was my passion. Unfortunately, I never became very good at it, and so a hobby faded into the background.

During a difficult period in my life, I looked for something to distract my thoughts. My mother was always busy with all kinds of creative activities, and at this time, she was doing a lot of embroidery. This is how a new hobby was born for me, and I started embroidering.

Even more hobbies

The first creative fair followed, and the hobby slowly became a regular part of my life. But every life has its ups and downs, and each time I immersed myself in a new hobby to distract my thoughts. Crochet, sewing, knitting, and many more hobbies followed.

Two years ago, my eye fell on something new that was actually quite old. Needle punching caught my attention, and in the lead-up to my son’s birth, I did quite a bit of punching. From there, it didn’t take long before I discovered tufting. Unlike other hobbies, which I often do temporarily and alternate between, I’ve been continuously engaged with this for a year now and still find it absolutely wonderful. The possibilities are endless.

Fate

Last year, disaster struck when my mother was in critical condition in intensive care for five weeks. At such a moment, you realize not only how important someone is but also everything you’ve learned from this person. I was slowly trying to set up a small business for myself. Initially, this was very difficult, and especially during this period, I just wanted to quit everything. But even when my mother was in an induced coma, she spoke to me through a memory from months earlier when she said that if I wanted something, I had to do the work for it and that I had to persevere.

And now?

Now, almost two years have passed, and I can say with great fortune that my mother is still here and supports me wherever she can. Not only my mother but my entire family is always ready to help me. My sister ran workshops during my maternity leave, my sister-in-law has supported me mentally multiple times during busier workshops and is always ready to try out my new ideas. My partner bends over backwards to keep our entire family operation running smoothly. My brothers and brother-in-law have been tremendously helpful in moving the studio. My father helps with odd jobs in the studio and for the fair, and I could go on and on. So, I really want to say that I owe a lot to my family, and I feel truly blessed to be part of this family.

What’s happening in the near future

The market for tufting is becoming quite saturated. In the coming period, I’m trying to broaden Funky Studio beyond just tufting. Tufting is in my heart and will remain so, but I also want Funky Studio to be future-proof. New workshops have been added, and new products are being purchased and sold. Feel free to drop by more often to take a look or subscribe to the newsletter so you don’t miss any news.
