What is gouache paint?
Gouache paint belongs to the water-soluble paint series. This paint is made from the same binders and pigments as watercolor paint. Gouache has the addition of blanc fixe which gives the paint its opacity. This is also the main difference from watercolor paint. Due to its opacity, gouache can be painted more pastose. The opacity also makes it easier to make corrections and you can paint light colors over dark colors, unlike with watercolor. With watercolor, the transparency will ensure that light colors will not cover the darker shadows underneath.
In addition to the paint being beautifully matte and opaque, you can also mix the different layers with each other. If you use a lot of water, the underlying layer becomes fluid again and mixes with the one above. If you use little water, you can easily paint opaquely over black with white.
What can you use it on?
The paint can also be used on many different surfaces such as paper, wood, concrete, and plaster. For paper, a pad with good quality paper is recommended, such as a gouache pad.
